The Training Process

THE TRAINING PROCESS

Athletes engage in a wide range of activities, from training and recovery to learning and becoming more self-confident. Your coaching processes should reflect this. E.g.

TRAINING PROCESS TRIGGERS

  • Adapt your coaching style to be more autocratic, democratic and holistic, as needed
  • Develop training plans with measurable outcomes to be agreed with athletes
  • Champion a collaborative, team-based approach to coaching

INJURY, RECOVERY AND REHABILITATION

All athletes can be injured, so recovery should be an essential part of your coaching. E.g.

  • Normalize each athlete’s recovery periods
  • Adjust the periods and time needed for them to recover and rehabilitate
  • Focus on both injuries and their underlying causes, to avoid the same injuries repeating themselves

PHYSIOTHERAPY, MEDICAL AND STRENGTHENING PRACTICES

Exploring the wide-ranging viewpoints on physical activities is vital for coaching. E.g.

  • Increase and/or decrease different forms of strength training
  • Change the training equipment, or use it in unusual (but safe) ways
  • Adjust your coaching to consider each individual’s medical issues
  • Introduce other professionals such as physiotherapists and medics

NUTRITION AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

Our scientific understanding of nutrition is evolving quickly. Talking with athletes about their diet and other issues can be therapeutic. E.g.

  • Seek to understand the impact of diet on each individual’s performance, and encourage new diets to improve it
  • Involve different professionals such as nutritionists in your coaching
  • Educate about the wider effects of nutrition on athlete wellbeing

COACHING ROLES

Coaches fulfil critical roles in each athlete’s process of training and preparing. Think about these different roles. E.g.

  • Leadership and/or mentoring roles that you need to adopt with each athlete
  • The extent to which you partner as an equal with each athlete
  • Other roles, such as guardians, which might be needed
