COMPETITIONS

Competitions can impact on athletes and their performances in diverse ways. Ensure you plan each competition for success. E.g.

COMPETITION TRIGGERS

  • Plan activities that prepare athletes for both the competitions and locations
  • Encourage some athletes to research the competitions they will compete in
  • Prepare athletes for the different locations they might compete it

LOCATIONS

Traveling to different locations can impact on athlete performance. Factor the impact of location into your coaching, and mitigate for it. E.g.

  • Explore how the location might impact the athlete, both positively and negatively
  • Seek to mitigate the possible negative impacts of a location
  • Think about the impact on the athlete's eating, sleeping and training patterns in a competition location

CLOSENESS TO COMPETITION

Athletes want to peak their performance for competitions. Think about the timelines prior to competitions, and how these impact on training and coaching. E.g.

  • Identify the different factors that might impact on training at different points along the timeline
  • Develop detailed training schedules based on these timelines
  • Use future planning scenarios to explore what can change over time, before it does

OPPOSITION

Athletes compete against opponents who often deploy different tactics. Preparing for these tactics is part of coaching. E.g.

  • Encourage athletes to research and understand their opponents
  • Deliberately plan for opponent tactics
  • Using different stand-ins for opponents during training sessions
